The Lake Vouliagmeni Visit Experience

Limanakia Beaches

Kavouri Beach (Akti Kavouriou)

By Public Transport (Cheapest)
€1.20 ticket, valid for 90 minutes including transfers. Take Metro Line 2 (red) to Argyroupoli. From there, take bus 122 towards Saronida. Stops at “Limni Vouliagmenis” (Lake) and “Vouliagmeni” (the town centre and Astir Beach access). Check times on OASA’s route planner.
By Tram + Bus
€1.20 per ticket. Take the T6 tram from Syntagma to Pikrodafni and change to the T7 towards Asklipieio Voulas, getting off in Glyfada. From Glyfada, bus 114 runs on via Kavouri to Vouliagmeni. Slower than the Metro+bus combination but more scenic along the coast.
By Taxi or Uber/Bolt

The Geology of Lake Vouliagmeni
Lake Vouliagmeni is a partial sinkhole, formed about 2,000 years ago when the roof of an underground cavern collapsed, probably after an earthquake. The lake measures roughly 260 by 145 metres and is deep, and its underwater cave has been explored for 3,123 metres without being fully mapped. The lake is connected to the open sea via underground channels; the visible lake represents only the top of a much larger underwater cave system beneath Mount Hymettus and the surrounding coastline.
The water is a mix of warm seawater and fresh spring water. Its temperature shifts with the seasons, between about 22°C and 29°C; the seawater component keeps the salinity low enough for comfortable swimming but high enough for the distinctive buoyancy. The mineral content includes sulphur, potassium, sodium, magnesium, and trace amounts of radon — the combination historically associated with therapeutic effects for skin conditions, rheumatism, and arthritis.
The Doctor Fish: A Lake Vouliagmeni Specialty
The most-distinctive Lake Vouliagmeni feature is the colony of tiny “Garra rufa” doctor fish that have inhabited the lake for centuries. These small freshwater fish gently nibble at the dead skin of swimmers’ feet and lower legs: a natural exfoliation. The fish are entirely safe; they have no teeth and the nibbling sensation is pleasant rather than painful (described variously as “tickling” or “fizzy”).
The doctor-fish phenomenon at Lake Vouliagmeni predates the modern fish-pedicure spa industry by decades. Garra rufa is a freshwater species, at home in rivers, lakes, ponds and streams. The Lake Vouliagmeni doctor fish are protected; visitors are asked not to disturb them with sudden movements.
Astir Beach: The Detailed Hotel-and-Beach Story
The original Astir Palace opened on the peninsula in August 1960. Its 30-hectare grounds take in three private beaches. Villas and bungalows, 61 in all, are still let as accommodation, and the hotel became a Four Seasons in 2019.
Four Seasons took over the property and opened it as Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens in March 2019.
